About 1 in 100 people will develop rheumatoid arthritis during their life time and it can happen to anyone, but is three times more common in women. It is not a hereditary disease, although you can be more susceptible if a member of your family has had rheumatoid arthritis. Although it can develop at any age, rheumatoid arthritis most commonly begins between the ages of 40 and 60.
If you believe you have symptoms such as swelling, pain and stiffness of joints which is normally worse first thing in the morning or you have a family history of Rheumatoid Arthritis then it would be advisable to have a CCPoint Rheumatoid Arthritis test.

The body's immune system normally makes antibodies to attack bacteria and viruses. However rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease which means that the immune system creates antibodies to attack its own body tissue.
When this happens in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, antibodies are formed against the tissue that surrounds each joint (the synovium) and this causes inflammation in and around the affected joints. Over time, the inflammation can damage the joint, the cartilage and parts of the bone near to the joint.
Although any joint can be affected, rheumatoid arthritis normally occurs in the fingers, thumbs, wrists, knees, feet and ankles. The condition is often symmetrical with the same joints being affected on both sides of the body.
Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis
The most commonly recognised symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are pain, stiffness and inflammation of affected joints. These symptoms may be most noticeable first thing in the morning or after you have been resting.
However, rheumatoid arthritis generally develops slowly and early indications may include common symptoms such as the feeling of general tiredness, fever, weight loss and anaemia.
About 25 percent of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers also develop small painless lumps or nodules under their skin. These characteristically occur at pressure points, such as the elbow or back of the forearm, but are usually harmless.
The onset of rheumatoid arthritis can also affect other parts of the body such as the lungs, heart, blood vessels or eyes. Although this is uncommon, serious symptoms and problems can present themselves if rheumatoid arthritis affects these areas.
Do I need this test?
If you believe you have symptoms such as swelling, pain and stiffness of joints which is normally worse first thing in the morning or you have a family history of Rheumatoid Arthritis then it would be advisable to have a CCPoint Rheumatoid Arthritis test.
When you first develop joint pains it may initially be difficult to determine what is causing them, as there could be many underlying reasons. However, CCPoint can help you identify if rheumatoid arthritis is the cause.
CCPoint works in the same way as the hospital anti-CCP test. Both The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and The American College of Rheumatology recommend using the anti-CCP test in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
If the test indicates positive you should consult your doctor. If your doctor suspects that you may have rheumatoid arthritis you will usually be referred to a joint specialist (a rheumatologist) to confirm the diagnosis and to advise on treatment.
*It is extremely important to begin early treatment after the confirmation of rheumatoid arthritis because any joint damage caused will be permanent.*
How does the test work?
CCPoint detects the presence of an antibody to a substance called cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) in a blood sample.
These auto-antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in affected individuals in response to citrulline. Citrulline is a chemically modified amino acid arginine.
It is now believed that the normal conversion of arginine to citrulline is part of the autoimmune inflammatory process seen in the joints of those with rheumatoid arthritis.
Is the test easy to do?
The test is easy to do and full illustrated colour instructions are included in the box.
How many tests are in a box?
The test includes everything required for one CCPoint Rheumatoid Arthritis test.
What should I do if the test gives me a positive result?
If the test indicates positive you may wish to contact your doctor to discuss the results.
What should I do if the test gives me a negative result?
A negative test result now is no guarantee that you will not develop Rheumatoid Arthritis in the future. If you are still concerned you should contact your doctor.
Will any drugs or medication affect the results?
Currently no drug has been shown to affect the results of the CCPoint test.
How much blood is required to do the test?
Only a few drops of blood from the finger tip are required.
Do I have to collect the blood sample at any particular time of day?
No, samples can be collected at any time of the day.
Are there any research papers or trials to support these tests?
Yes, a number of studies have been carried out and demonstrated the diagnostic benefits of CCPoint testing. Please email sales@invitech.co.uk for reference to trials that have been carried out.
Is the test appropriate for children?
As a diagnostic test anti-CCP is not effective in diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis in young children.
Does the test have any potential risks?
The CCPoint OTC test is highly specific and extremely sensitive for detecting the early signs of Rheumatoid Arthritis. However, in line with commercial testing processes a 100% guarantee cannot be given. A positive result is a strong indicator of the likelihood of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis but a negative result does not completely rule out the risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis. If you are concerned you should always consult your doctor.
