Why do I need this test?

If you have a drinking session the night before it may be helpful to know if you are over the limit the following morning. Especially if your job involves the ability to drive or concentrate.

The blood alcohol concentration at which an individual becomes impaired is variable dependent on the individual, such as size, weight, metabolic rates, eating habits and alcohol tolerance.

Breathalyser Test

The readings provided on this device are accurate, but should be used as a guide only of the amount of alcohol consumed.

Prior to conducting a test, 20 minutes should have elapsed since the last drink of alcohol. If donor has been smoking - wait for one minute after the last cigarette.

Test procedure

  1. Fit a new unused clear plastic mouthpiece to the breath pipe
  2. Turn power switch ON. The detector will then display a countdown from 234 to 000. (This is the warm-up procedure)
  3. A beep will sound and a green light will be on, the machine is now READY
  4. The donor should now blow steadily into the pipe until the beep sounds again (approximately 3 seconds), then STOP
If the machine is not used within 30 seconds it will display OFF and beep.

Interpretation of results

  1. After the donor has finished blowing, the red and green lights will flicker simultaneously for 4 seconds
  2. The test result will be displayed for 15 seconds
  3. If the donor has only consumed a very small amount of alcohol the display may just show 0.00
  4. The reading is BREATH ALCOHOL CONTENT (BRAC) and 0.25mg/l* is the default setting. At this level a red WARN lamp will be flickering along with the ALARM sound.
  5. Unless successive testing is to be carried out switch off when OFF is displayed.
  6. If Red warning light “Hot” this is due to excesses of Alcohol

Successive testing

  1. Wait for two minutes between tests
  2. Replace clear plastic mouthpiece
  3. Repeat testing proce

Warning

  1. When BAT LOW lamp is on, replace the 9v alkaline battery
  2. Keep the machine at temperature between 32 - 104 degrees F
  3. Remove car adaptor from vehicle socket when not in use
  4. Do not blow smoke or liquid into the device
  5. Recalibrate when necessary after approximately 250 tests or every 6-12 month.

Instructions

  • Press and hold the Power Switch to turn the unit on.  The cumulative test count will be displayed as you hold the Power Switch down.  You can use the cumulative test count to see when you should replace the sensor module at 250 tests.
  • Release the Power Switch.  There will be a countdown from 234 to 0 as the unit warms up.
  • Secure your lips around the mouthpiece and blow sharply and steadily into the unit for about 4 seconds.  You will hear two beeps when the device is done taking the breath sample.  You will see the digit 0 moving left to right in the display as the device analyzes the sample.
  • When analysis is complete, you will see the blood alcohol concentration (BRAC) results displayed.  e) The results will be shown for about 15 seconds.  The unit will then shut itself off.
  • If the device cannot take a successful sample, you will see OUT in the display and the unit will shut itself off.

0.08%BAC / 0.40mg/l BRAC - UK Drink and Drive Limit

Warning range

Ability to dive may be impaired

(Flashing WARN indicator and repeating beep)

Drinking alcohol in ANY amount may impair the ability to drive.  There is no “safe” level of alcohol intake before driving.  Don’t drink and drive.

Note: The maximum reading the device can show is 0.40%. A true BAC of 0.40% or above may result in the onset of coma or even death by respiratory arrest. A reading of 0.40% may indicate an acutely dangerous condition, but may also indicate a sampling error (such as liquid alcohol blown into the device).  Please carefully read the Warnings section of this manual before operating the device.

Warnings

  • Wait at least 20 minutes after eating or drinking before testing.  Alcohol remaining in the mouth, or even excess saliva, may interfere with testing.  This includes alcohol-based mouthwash or similar products.
  • Avoid testing in high wind or enclosed spaces.  Poor ventilation may also lengthen the time required for warm up between tests.
  • Do NOT blow smoke, saliva or other contaminants into the mouthpiece, as the sensor may become damaged.
  • Do NOT use the AL6000 as a tool to drink and drive.
  • Keep out of extreme temperatures and out of the reach of children.
  • To maintain accuracy, we recommend replacing the alcohol sensor module inside the AL6000 every 250 tests or at least once a year, whichever comes first.  Large numbers of "high positive" (high alcohol) readings may require replacing the module much sooner than normally expected.
  • WARNING DISPLAY “Flo”:  If you see “Flo” in the display, the breath sample was not strong enough for measurement.  Please try again and make sure the breath is strong and steady during sampling.
  • WARNING DISPLAY “Cal”: If you see “Cal” in the display, the unit requires sensor module replacement.  It is recommended that you use the cumulative test counter to determine when you should replace the sensor module.  The cumulative test count can be seen by pressing and continuously holding down the Power Button on start up.  The “Cal” message may or may not display regularly when sensor replacement is actually necessary.
  • WARNING DISPLAY “Bat”: If you see “Bat” in the display, the battery power is low.  Please replace the batteries.

Remove the battery cover at the bottom of the unit and replace the old batteries with two new 1.5V “AA” batteries.  Make sure to properly align the batteries by looking at the +/- marks.
