What is colic?
Infant colic is a common condition, affecting around 1 in 5 infants in the UK in their first month of life. However, it is not a serious medical condition and usually resolves by the age of 3-4 months. Colic is usually recognised by bouts of inconsolable crying, often for hours at a time, for no specific reason - i.e. your baby is not hungry, overtired, needs a nappy change or has a raised temperature.
Despite medical research, no one is certain what causes infant colic. A likely explanation may be the build up of trapped wind in your baby's bowel causing pain and discomfort.
Colic most commonly occurs in the late afternoon and evening when your baby may cry out in pain, draw her knees up to her chest and go red in the face. Her tummy may be swollen or bloated as if she's swallowed a lot of air, and she might pass wind more than usual.
A colicky baby can be very distressing for everyone in the house. Listening to long periods of crying can leave you feeling tired, stressed and emotionally drained. Despite the intensity of your baby's cries, it is important to remember that colic is not a serious medical condition.
What is wind and how do you wind properly?
Some babies take in more air than others when feeding, whether they are breast or bottle fed. Wind can be distressing and may prevent adequate intake of nutrients - because your baby's stomach will feel full and feeding will stop. After and possibly mid-way through a feed you should help your baby to bring up any air that may have been taken in with the milk. Four ways to wind your baby are:
What is lactose intolerance?
Milk, infant formulae, breast milk and dairy products all contain a type of sugar called lactose. Those who suffer from lactose intolerance are unable to properly digest this type of sugar in their bodies. A key difference between the symptoms of colic and those of lactose intolerance is that the lactose intolerant baby suffers from diarrhoea. The pressure generated by lactose and lactic acid in the stomach produces an influx of water leading to a swollen abdomen and acidic diarrhoea.
How to give infacol to your baby
Infacol is simple to give - even when your baby is crying. The normal dose is one dropper full (0.5ml) and for best results it should be given before each feed for several days, but don't worry if you forget one or more doses.
 |
First shake the bottle |
 |
 |
Draw up one dropper full by squeezing the bulb twice, wiping any excess Infacol off from the outside of the dropper back into the bottle |
 |
To administer the dose squeeze the bulb and release the liquid onto the back of your baby's tongue |
Infacol has a progressive effect, which means that it should be given to your baby for several days to achieve the best results. If your baby's colic hasn't improved after three to four days you can increase the dosage to two droppers full (1ml), particularly at night before the evening feed. Continued usage may also help to prevent further build-up of wind.
If symptoms do not improve, or get worse contact your health visitor or family doctor for advice.
