Spots are caused by the over-activity of the glands in the skin that are responsible for the production of oil (sebum). That’s why you normally get spots and blackheads in areas where there are the most of these glands, like on your face, back, chest and shoulders. When there is an excess of sebum, skin pores can get blocked and inflamed – the result is red swollen spots that are often tender.
This over-activity of the oil glands is usually caused by sex hormone changes during puberty and sometimes during pregnancy too.

What can I do about them?
There are lots of treatments available for dealing with spots.
Most spot and acne treatments you can buy in pharmacies contain benzoyl peroxide. These work by drying out the skin and speeding up the shedding of the skin’s top layer. But the downside is that these treatments can irritate your skin, redden it and cause peeling. They can also bleach hair, clothing, towels and bedding. They can make your face glow when under ultraviolet light, the kind you get in clubs and bars - not a good look for anyone.
How it works
Freederm gel works in a different way to other spot treatments you can buy, because it actually targets the process that causes the spots in the first place.
It penetrates the skin to reach the sebaceous glands (which produce oil in your skin). By targeting this area with its anti-inflammatory action, Freederm gel doesn’t only deal with the spots that are already visible, but helps stop the spots that are just starting to form too.
And thanks to its special hydro-gel formulation, you'll find that Freederm gel is less drying than some spot or acne treatments.
Using Freederm Gel
Apply Freederm gel to the areas of skin where you need it, twice a day, morning and night, after cleansing and gently drying with a clean towel.
When you apply the gel, use three fingers to spread a thin film of it as evenly as you can over the whole area where there are spots or acne.
Make sure you read and keep Freederm gel's 'Patient Information' leaflet which is in the pack. This will give you more useful instructions on how to get the best from your treatment.
