This month we would like to tell you more about the smoking ban due to start in the UK in July 2007.
Smoking Ban
The government has announced that from July 1st 2007 smoking will be banned in England in all enclosed public places. This ban will cover virtually all public enclosed places, this includes offices, factories, restaurants, pubs and bars but not in outdoor places and private homes.
Ministers stay that the ban will protect everyone from passive smoking.
From July 1st 207 all bars and restaurants will have to display prominent no smoking signs around their premises.
Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt said the ban was "a huge step forward" which would save thousands of people's lives. Ms Hewitt said the ban would protect everyone from second hand smoke while making it easier for smokers to quit. She said "The scientific and medical evidence is clear - second hand smoke kills, causing a range of serious medical conditions including lung cancer, heart disease and sudden infant death syndrome. This legislation will help prevent the unnecessary deaths caused every year from second hand smoke, and recognises that there is absolutely no safe level of exposure."
The estimated cost of implementing the ban is £50. The government predicts that 600,000 people will give up smoking as a result of the law change.
Anyone found breaking the ban will be subject to a £50 penalty and there will be a £2500 penalty for premises which fail to stop people from smoking.
